Birkbeck Inspires event 25 August: World prison populations in a time of pandemic

COVID-19 has revealed the permeability of prison walls, the virus spreading from prison staff to prisoners and back into communities, highlighting the extreme health inequalities faced by most prisoners – in developed and less developed countries alike.

Catherine Heard, Director of the World Prison Research Programme at Birkbeck’s Institute for Crime & Justice Policy Research (ICPR), will present research on the extent of prison overcrowding worldwide, and the many factors that combine to create today’s unsustainable levels of incarceration.

After a short pre-recorded video including a tour of ICPR’s World Prison Brief website, Catherine will take questions in a live Q&A session. The event is aimed at all audiences, including prospective students and anyone interested in criminal justice and public health.
